July 4th, 2009: I was honored with being able to attend a US Citizenship Swear-In ceremony for members of the US Armed Forces, held in Townpoint Park, Norfolk, VA. I myself attended such a ceremony in 1997 to become a proud citizen of this great nation. I love the symbolic notion of the one foot that is sort of suggesting taking that next step forward as a citizen to be.

Amazing use of a narrow aperture to get a great Depth Mate!

Can you become a member of the U.S armed forces without being a citizen?

If so… I’m joining up as soon as we get over there!!

  • Cool, I’ll get everything setup …. Yes Michael, you can be a member of the US military without being a Citizen. That’s what I did, and that caused me also to get out, as I was not able to join the Special Forces while still being a citizen of Germany. I figured it should be a 2 way street a little bit, and what I really wanted to do, the military didn’t allow me, so I got out.

A proud and emotional moment for everyone I’m sure…it comes across here in this fine image.
I bet those whites are hard to keep clean!!

  • I can’t imagine having to wear whites like that. I guess it takes a lot of pride and attention to detail to keep them looking sharp. I’m more of a camo guy, don’t mind playing around in the dirt at all.

This is a beautiful photograph, I that there are no faces in it. It also is so so clear and a beautiful bw image. Deserving to be recognized in one of the groups you added it to. Best of Luck…. SueAnne

  • Thank you so much SueAnne, very kind of you!

Andy, this is one of your best! Love the emotion and stirring so well captured in this image. I’m a total flag waver, and proud of it—cry every time I sing the National Anthem. Love this shot!

  • Wow, thank you Kevin! Too kind of you to say. Yeah, I’m a “lush” when it comes to the National Anthem or patriotic stuff like that also. Hard not to keep a dry eye for me either – and damn proud of it too (although shy about it when in public).

This is a fantastic image and fantastic story, it is so nice to hear from you how much you are grateful to live in such a beautiful country. God bless you my friend!

  • You have no idea how greateful I am to this country. Not that Germany is bad, but I have made something out of myself here, which would have been impossible to do in Germany.
