Grounded
2009 NAS Oceana Airshow, Virginia Beach, VA.
I love Airshows, absolutely love them. This year was a bit of a dissapointment though. The weather just did not cooperate. Conditions were perfect for getting some aircraft with nice vapor cones, and I did get a few keepers on Saturday. I couldn’t leave well enough alone and went back out on Sunday, it was MISERABLE! Not a single jet flew ….. The Canadian Snowbirds only took off to leave back to Canada.
Blue Angels #5 sitting on the tarmac, wheel choks removed, ladder still attached. They were trying to put on a show, but it was just too nasty out, ceiling was less than 1000ft for them to even put on the “Flat Show”..

Great capture and narrative Andy. When weather is too bad for VFR and the only flying is by instruments, it does indeed kill the Air Show. The Blue Angle F-18 Hornet (or is it a Super-Hornet?) really looks good with the sepia tones. But the best part of all is the other grounded birds sitting on the Tarmac. (Yeah,,,those organic ones,,,sea-gulls maybe?) Even they couldn’t get clearance from the tower to take off. Now that’s socked in. :)
Andy Mueller replied
Alex, they fly the Hornet. I loved the seagulls in this shot as well, like you said, even they appeared to have been “grounded”. I have never been on a shoot where i actually was beginning to worry about my gear (D300 is water resistent), but my lenses sure are not ….. It’s rare that I spend all day behind the camera and NOT be enjoying myself.

OH WOW! Love this Andy! Fantastic! Sure will not get any cotton balls sitting on the tarmac. Love the treatment. The birds just give the feel… its no human interaction going to happen any time soon. LOVE the lone feel of this shot.

Thanks for the fave! Thank you for the comment.

The only thing i’ve ever seen that looks fast, standing still with a ladder attached to it,Andy, the gulls really make this shot special, for me,and the toning adds to the general gloomy feel.
Andy Mueller replied
Thank you so much, Lance! It was a miserable day, I’m glad I at least got something to post that folks here like! Thanks for the fave, too!
Spencer Trickett
Nice job Andy. The f18 looks so sorry for itself here, nice detail with the birds in the foreground too.
Andy Mueller replied
Thanks Spencer, I can assure you that I looked even more miserable! I am glad I stuck around, I was the only person still there besides all the folks working to get the Masterjet base back to normal operation. So it netted some nice unobstructed views, which i am surprised turned out at all, given the water droplets on my filter.

Bad day for flying, but a terrific moment for this shot! Nice salvage!

Weather can do that…But this capture is still outstanding!!!

This image really is fantastic, the gulls, water on the tarmac and the tones used just enhances the gloom of the day.
Great capture. – Peter

Great shot. You are a braver man than I am. I thought about heading back out Sunday, just didn’t make it.

Andy Mueller replied
Thank you so much Vicki, it was such a miserable day. Like even the Seagulls were grounded. Thanks for the nice comment!
