Firewater
Captured at the 2009 Harborfest in Norfolk, VA. This was taken during an underwater dive demo, the crew of the Salvageship Cromo, demonstrated the techniques of cutting steel underwater while wearing an antique but 100% functional dive suit and helmet. Best viewed in LARGE for sure!

Hot damn…one sweet image Andy. I have a deep respect for the people that do this type of work.
Andy Mueller replied
You’re not kidding …. just think about the “dynamics” here (which I know you have) ... this is more for other readers: Water, Electricity, Fire, Air Hoses, Weight belts, Fuel, Oil and all underwater?
Joel Hall
So cool looking!
Andy Mueller replied
Thank you Joel!

I used to sit around with these guys and listen to the greatest stories…like vomiting into one’s helmet. (who hasn’t done that)
Andy Mueller replied
vomitting inside the helmet/suit? Oh, that had to be awful ….. I sometimes sneezed inside my motorcyccle helmet without putting the visor up first…. you know, “allergies”.... hehehehe.

Fantastic capture Andy..wow!
Eva and Klaus ...

Shelly Hiebert
Oh, I am sooooo glad you put this one up Andy! I love the sparks flying! Awesome, awesome! (and ewwwwwww to the helmet story….both yours and Von’s lol!)
Michael Bermi...
Yeah!!!
This one kicks arse Mate!! You’ve captured the feel of this perfectly!
I have read many a book on WW2 navy clearance divers spending months cutting up scuttled ships in a captured port.
Those guys were REAL heroes! Always the threat of being pinned under what you were cutting through. Must’ve have been claustrophobic as hell!
Andy Mueller replied
Hear Hear Mate!
Andy Mueller replied
Sorry, normally my reply would be longer, but I am dead tired …. Went to the Navy Dare Bombing Range today, took 2000 shots of mostly F/A-18 Hornets drop bombs and strafe targets in a mock Iraqi city. You have not lived, until you have seen something like it!
Kevin Bergen
really terrific shot! The sharpness is impeccable for an out-of-water shot—how did you get this so crisp UNDER water?? Colors are beautiful.
Andy Mueller replied
Kevin, yes out of water shot! The demo was sort of right at the waterline, normally they would obviously conduct these tasks while totally submerged.

Easy. Camera was air exposed. I presume a captured air pocket ,or a sealed void into which a partial atmosphere was created. I love the shot, but half it’s beauty comes from the reflective qualities of the waters surface, which if mine old eyes not deceive me is right at top shoulder, bottom helmet. Anybody who wants to ARC weld or Gas Weld while submerged, or even partially submerged has my respect. But back to the photo. I love it from the shackle on the cage, to the C-clamp which has got to be holding his demo piece of steel to cut. (ie it isn’t the ground lead of an arc welder.) I again base this upon the hoses going into the water, and their color. I even like the green corroded brass fittings on the bell helmet. Super work Andy. (Come on,,,the students and the cameraman weren’t submerged,,,,,come on ,,,you can tell me.) :0 :)
Andy Mueller replied
Holy smokes Alex, you are spot on with every aspect of how this image came to be ….. I love the “air exposed” eplanation! Hillarious!

Just love the sparks and the reflections. Awesome!

Very cool capture, love the flying sparks, the detail in the helmet and the reflections on the water. Top stuff, well done, straight into the favourites! I pressume it’s HDR?

Such a great image!! Reminds me of some old films starring a Mexican actor whose name escapes me … but he spent a lot of time in similar circumstances. Always found it fascinating (and a little scarey).
Love the tones/colours!!
Angel Perry
Ahh YES! So glad you posted this one! Love it!
John Vandeven
It is an amazing shot…..Thanks for sharing….
Go well in *1:1 with the News
Vicki Ferrari
An absolutely incredible image you have captured here Andy – it looks very surreal, almost as if it were a painting… is that dive suit made of brass or copper? What a job!!! Fave!
Andy Mueller replied
Thank you Vicki. The helmet indeed is made out of copper, the suit itself is made from a variety of materials, linen, rubber, leather. They gave the entire demo on donning the suit on the Salvage boat. It was really cool!
Vicki Ferrari
How heavy is the suit? And the helmet on its own? And if it is really heavy, how do you stop from going (glug glug glug) down to the bottom?!! Floatation device?! :))
Shoaib .
way cool…. love this

Now I can’t even think up a word to describe this. This is amazing, Andy!
Your portfolio is simply awesome, my friend.
