Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and
they shall call His name Emmanuel, which is translated,
“God with us.”
She thinks nothing of herself,
Wearing her humility, without wealth
Where did the notion of God come,
And search out this simple girl He loved
Why, she’s no different than her friends,
Just one, you wouldn’t look again,
So, why in the name of the eternal,
That perhaps left the devil scratch his infernal!
And down through minutes and hours post and hence,
Church leaders have sat on their theological fence,
What mind had God in spirit or flesh
To touch this one, and leave all the rest,
We could puzzle thus, remaining unanswered,
Immutable, but blessed, Immutable and still
And I light a candle as I ponder His holy will,
Mary, of Nazereth, blessed be thy womb
The moment I saw this window, its rich tapestry of color, beguiling my human eyes, I knew. I knew that somewhere, in the history of this place, some man, some woman had dressed this wall, with no common face, an yet…..in the annals of a misbegotten tumble of history, the fact remained that simple as she was, a young girl, mere virgin in a forgotten village, in a nation under the grinding thumb of an iron hand, Mary had been chosen. And chosen rang through my mind, like the bells of St. Mary’s in the movie of the name, the clappers assigned and beating against the bronze, that somehow, God had, with thoughtful finger to his frowning lips, picked this girl, this town, this nation.
Mary is no iconoclast, but a humble Jewish woman, a representative of all the women, wonderful, exalted, soiled, abused, more misunderstood, more maligned than all beings on earth.
And out of Heaven comes the command, “Behold!”
One quiet afternoon conversation to Mary herself, throwing her world upside down. One to Elizabeth her aunt, throwing her into consternation. Religion has discussed both women since then, as if they were meaty aftertastes of a consummate heavenly feast, dissecting their Jewishness to the marrow, and their womanhood to the soul.
I wonder if the men of this world, in some perverted egostical fashion are somehow jealous that the womb belongs solely to the fairer sex, realizing that God dealt the highest calling of humankind to the humble girl? Millions of stalwart hominids on this planet are threatened by the diminutive female, so, vastly unrecognizable in his deceipt, does man wish to selfishly take all of God’s assignments on himself?!
For thousands of years, the diabolical contrast between man and woman has been the glorified and jealous unapproachable domain, of man. On one hand, he worships the ground “elle” walks upon, and diversely, he castigates her in any way he can. Abuse the soul, the most private part of a woman, and take her by any means. It is a harsh world that God left woman, into which she had and has endured the emotional tortures of a man. Man, the murderer of his kind, the bastion on which Satanic rule most often depends for his own bloodletting. Dispicable on one hand, deeply gentle on the other. A sexual and spiritual conundrum beyond measure.
And Mary, perhaps the soul of God in human form, bears Jesus, the God who she then worships. God has a gentle and tender sense of humor.
I would venerate her, as I worship Him. I would remember her sacrifice, as I thank Him for his. Mary bowed to the will of God, producing a real Savior. It is no mean thing that God chose her, and perhaps now we know why.
Mary, thank you for being the handmaiden of the Creator.
