The last time,
I ever saw you,
Was knee deep,
In salty brine,
Mute, and certain to stay there,
You told me,
It was never to be mine.

Wayne, this is STUNNING!!! VERY professional and VERY moving and thought provoking!!!!!!

  • Wayne Cook replied

I had one chance, with a guide I talked into going into the flooded basement to see this sculture…I was stunned at both the beauty and the amount of water down there…they’ve had to shut the gates downstairs in Winchester Cathedral, and hired a diver to try to put cement in the walls to both seal it, and to keep it from sinking further…the water table has gone up a couple of inches in the last 5 years….

Just awesome! Now is this a statue standing in water ? just love it!

  • Wayne Cook replied

Hi, Rita! Yes, in the basement of Winchester Cathedral, water has come in as the church has sunk that far into the water table. So the basement remains flooded. The church authorities started back in the 20’s to get a diver in to put in more cement in the walls to seal them, but it costs so much money, it is taking them many, many years to fix…meanwhile, the water gradually rises….Of course, for an artist, it’s an incredible find. The guide took me down stairs, because there were very few people that day, so we kind of sneaked down, and while he told me the story, I shot two images. I had seen the one the church uses to advertise, but I didn’t like it, so shot my own. We artists can be so demanding ! :o)

WOW! What a stunning image… All the beautiful architecture surrounding this thought evoking statue thats slowly being swallowed by its own dark sea… really one of my favorites… you have given those of us who have seen this photo the chance to see something that may never be seen again. How sad that is on its own… Thanks 8) Beautiful!

  • Wayne Cook replied

I am blown away, by the response to this image and only just found your comments…thank you so much.

  • Wayne Cook replied

Beautiful Wayne – makes me wish I had visited Winchester – was on my list but ran out of time. Great find.

  • Wayne Cook replied

I had heard about it, and asked to see it. I was astonished at this beauty hidden away in the BASEME! But without the flooding, it would not have been near this lovely…

  • Wayne Cook replied

There are two really beautiful churches there in the south, Winchester and Salisbury….Salisbury has a better looking interior, and Winchester has the external grandeur….except that incredible basement.

  • JaneAParis

Wow, amazing!!! So beautiful and all alone. The reflections in the water are gorgeous. A very interesting church basement. The sculpture seems to belong there in some strange way. If I could I would give this a thousand favorites, it is really touching in some very magical sad way. Smiles from Jane:-)
