This may seem a funny question but I’ve been asked this quite a few times over the last……. erm………………… what’s it now……. 4 years !
This question keeps arising now and again at work or at the pub, out on location, taking portraits, wherever and I’ve never been able to fully answer it.
The question is " What is photography ? "
Now, I always think this is simple to answer, mainly because I know how much I enjoy the whole process.
I love the travelling I’ve done in my pursuit, the excitement of " getting the shot ", the waiting in the cold ( or the heat ) for hours, the " seeing the shot ", the sound of the shutter, the pride I take, the smile I find myself doing when someone looks at my work and says " Wow ! " and, of course the humbling I feel when someone thinks it’s good enough to spend their hard earned cash on something I’ve created ( or captured ! )….. The whole shabang. You know the sort of thing, we’ve all been there.
But I still can’t fully answer someone when they ask " What is photography ? "
You see, may be it’s a little more complicated than that. For instance is photography an art or is it a science ? May be it’s both ?
Surely Joseph Niepce was experimenting with both chemistry and physics when he made the first photograph in circa 1826.
Or may be it’s that perfect landscape with that perfect lighting just at sunset that can never be repeated and sells to an art collector for £$100,000,000 ( or something ! )
May be ( to some ) it’s the pictures of what’sit from that band and who’sit the model getting married in a magazine.
May be it’s just a happy snap of me or you on holiday when we were 10 years old with uncle so and so when he had a big moustache !
May be photography itself is history like Ansell Adams and his great black and white images of North America or Robert Cappa and his images of World War 2.
Or may be the images by you and me ?
So, " What is photography ? "
Any ideas ?
