The Neolithic village at Skara Brae, on Mainland in the Orkney Islands lay buried under soil and turf until 1850, when a great storm stripped away the soil to reveal the remarkably intact dwellings dating back to 3100BC (That’s before the Giza Pyramids!) Extensive archaeological investigation has revealed that the village was occupied until about 2500BC – that’s 600 years. In this photo can be seen the hearth, beds and a stone dresser where the family’s valuables would be displayed.

Excatly where is Skara Brae? It sounds Scottish.

  • Thank you very much, Al. Skara Brae is on Mainland in the Orkney Islands, just to the north of Scotland. Thanks for the ‘heads up’; it’s in my tags but I will amend the description.
