Oh, he wasn’t guarding me. I got as close as I dared but I could tell he was uneasy about my presence. They are timid animals but at this time of year the stags are unpredictable and he could have just as easily attacked as run away. He was, of course, guarding his harem of hinds from other stags. Many thanks, Jan. Bit of a tiddler compared with your moose but red deer are our largest land mammal. This is, of course, a deer park. I wouldn’t have had a hope of getting this close to one in the wild.
