Dauntless

It took an enormous amount of courage to fly an SBD Dauntless dive bomber. All the job entailed was flying a slow-moving aircraft directly down into the path of an enemy ship’s antiaircraft guns. A lot of them never returned.

Beautiful work, John, of one of my favourite aircraft, the plane piloted by those fearless young men who virtually won the war against Japan in five minutes at the Battle of Midway. Yes the war in the Pacific lasted another three long years but it really was all over for Japan after Midway but they just didn’t know it.

  • John Reardon replied

Keen observation, Mike. Yes, for all intents and purposes the war in the Pacific was won by a handful of dive bombers. Until they arrived on the scene, the Battle of Midway was a lost cause.

Yeah, I love this plane too. Brave crew, dive down vertically over an enemy ship under fire, hit the air brakes on the wings to slow the plane down, take aim on a moving, turning ship…drop the bombs, pull up, brakes in, power on and make a get away from the anti-aircraft fire and enemy fighters. Very brave and crazy and a great drawing! Love it!
