This is part 2.. laying in more details with charcoal. This canvas is 120 cm x 200 cm by

This piece involves a lot of drawing.
Having been a cartoonist / illustrator for so many years, I love to draw…
I treat a large canvas the same as i treat a piece of paper….
The only difference is i seal the charcoal with light glazes of acrylic washes as i go..When i get more detail in I will start the glazing stage….

This one is based on an
Elox
photograph…
Please follow link above to see some beautiful and haunting work.

I also collaborate with
Jean M. Laffitau

These two craftsmen are truly inspirational …
They have both kindly allowed me to work from their great photographs….

Each painting I have done in these collaborations has sold within a day or a week upon completion.
I am so grateful to both men.
Please visit their sites via the links above….
Thank-you all for your kind words and support
warren………….. xx

well done on the charcoal so far a beautiful skilled and great drawing .Warren do you use any fixative before you start on with the acrylic washes ? LIZ

  • Hey Liz…………Yeah i like this stage.. I am pretty rough at this stage, and I am just going for some nice contrasts….I will tone and glaze as soon as i get the rest of the charcoal laid in tomorrow

  • oh yeah and on the sealing of charcoal ..I do it with the acrylic glazing….
I mix the two and get my tones and values happening…
I go back and forth between the two….There is graphite in this piece too. it lends a nice reflective quality…..The charcoal makes a flatter deeper black. The graphite gives a nice reflective quality… The acrylic brings (or marries) the two………….

beautifully done, these reflections are awesome!

  • Hi Marta……..Funny really.. When in my studio i don’t like people seeing the painting at this rough stage.. I purposely over darken things.. It will soften and blend more as i lay in the acrylic glazes…………….
and thanx so much for joining me again………….xx

Love this Warren. You are the Master..your details perfection! I always love the charcoal version & color version..never can pick which the most. Hugz Carmen

  • hey Carmen..How is your slice of heaven.???
Yeah i love how rough and free I am with the charcoal stage… Contrast and tones…..fun……………. I always say i will sell my roughs but they get snapped up and i never have them…ahhaa
so i draw straight on canvas and paint over my studies as they evolve….
