St. Crispins Day – 25th October 1944’
“He that outlives this day, and comes safe home” *
A struggling B17, with one engine out and another running rough, limps home to base in the UK escorted by a Mustang, ‘little friend’. The early onset of winter in 1944 made the operations of the 8th Air force that little bit more difficult as they came to grips with European weather as well as the hazards of operational flying. The crew, undoubtedly now one of ‘the band of brothers’, will surely acknowledge the full impact of the quotation as home comes into view.
