Counterstrike (Fokker Dr1 and SE5a)
Having just lost his wingman to the marauding Fokker Dr1 this SE5 has turned the tables with a strike on the port side of the Dr1 causing a fracture in the fuel feed. The inevitable fire spells the end, and a most unpleasant one, for the German pilot – most German aircrew did not carry parachutes at that time, they were banned for the RFC crews. World War 1 aerial combat was a truly desperate struggle with young pilots thrown into battle with minimal training and an average life expectancy, on reaching squadron, of some three to four weeks. A typical encounter in Flander’s skies in early 1918.
