Spotted Sun Orchid

The spotted sun orchid (thelymitra ixioides) grows in open forest in the Blue Mountains, this particular one was spotted in between Katoomba and Medlow Bath, however we have also located them in Mt Victoria.

The flowers of this beautiful spring flowering terrestrial orchid only open fully on a warm, sunny day hence the name of sun orchid. The flowers can be found in colours varying from lilac to bright blue. The orchid is identified by its spots on the upper three segments of the flower. It grows in sandstone soils in open bushland and heath in slightly moist soil.
