On the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains they are reintroducing Elk to the mountains. I can not explain how awesome it is to go and see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. No fences. Nothing between you and them. But as with all wildlife you must respect them. I have seen them charge at a vehicle or a person for getting too close. This photo is a photo of #2. All of the Elk are taged and collared to track their progress.

He is just beautiful! Very nice shot!

  • Thank you Flyfish. They are so neat to sit and watch. It was mating time when we were there and the bulls were REALLY active watching over their “ladies”.

You are so lucky to have such an opportunity like this happen so close to you. They tried this back in VA when I was younger, but with western deer.

A man had his photo taken for the paper for taking one of the biggest deer the state had seen. The feds got involved and tracked down all of their deer they had planted and found the remains of one up on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Federal land, preserve). After a few test on meat and remains and this guy lost his house, all guns, vehicles, jailed for quite a few years, no hunting or fishint for the rest of his life and had to pay back (I think $160,000) for replacement of the deer and the babies it would have had.

I hope that never happens to your big boys there. But, needless to say, that guy in VA will never do that again lol. I love it when people get what they deserve.

  • Wow. I haven’t heard of losing any in this way. There were a few that have died but I believe it was all natural causes.

Yes I agree, people should be punished for things like that but I also believe they should be punished for even disturbing wildlife. I always take my photos responsibly and totally respect the animal.
