To celebrate the 4th of July!
Opened in 2011, this is one of the newest memorials on the “Mall” in Washington, DC. The monument for the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. is situated on the Tidal Basin across the water from the Jefferson Memorial and a short distance from the FDR Memorial. There has been some controversy about this monument, the most active being the condensing of one of the quotes engraved on the side of the statue. This is being resolved by replacing the shortened quote with the full passage from the speech. The image of MLK was carved in marble by a Chinese master sculptor, Lei Yixin.
