Built as a monument to Freemasonry in Queensland and as a World War I memorial, the Masonic Temple is an exceptional example of an Australian Masonic Temple. The temple makes an importan contribution to the streetscape of Ann Street through the scale of its giant order Corinthian columns and its interiors, particularly the Grand Hall and the Court of Remembrance, are renowned for their grandeur. It is substantially intact both externally and internally and is held in high regard by the Masonic community.

The Grand Lodge Room, a large symmetrical open space with a vaulted coffered ceiling and stepped seating facing the centre, on the top floor seated 1100 people and was described in the Architecture and Building Journal in February 1928 as the ‘largest and finest of its kind in Australia.

I had to look up ‘coffered’… sunken square or rectangular or octagon panels. So there ya go… I’m now a know-it-all. Nice work again, William. When I was a kid, I had an uncle who used to invite the family over for slide nights and… no… I won’t say any more.

  • That’s very edumacated of you Gary :) You know, I didn’t even bother to look it up – it was only that the guide said that it was a “coffered ceiling”, so I just went with it. Now we’ve both learned something today :)
