As the seat of Queensland’s government since 1868, Parliament House is unique as the first and only purpose-built parliamentary building in Queensland. At the time of construction it was the largest and most imposing building in the state, indicating the sense of optimism felt by the Queensland Government of the time.

The original three-storey wing of Parliament House, facing George Street, was constructed in 1865–68 to the design of the Colonial Architect, Charles Tiffin. The building was in the Renaissance Revival style, and the main building materials were dressed sandstone from Woogaroo (now known as Goodna) and brick.

The Legislative Council was abolished by Edward G. Theodore’s (“Red Ted”) Labor Government in 1922, and Queensland became the only Australian state with a unicameral parliament. The Council Chamber, although rarely used, remains more elaborately decorated than its Assembly Chamber counterpart.

Photographing interiors must be quite a challenge… having to choose what to include and what to exclude, since you can’t take a shot of the whole thing. All I can say is at first glance, I said, “wow”. Now I gotta figure out how the hell you got in there.

  • Hehe. It was Brisbane Open House Day yesterday. I managed to get inside quite a few buildings you can’t normally get into. I’ve got over 200 photos that I’m processing!
