Captured in 2009 this image is one of a few of my favorites from an Autumn trip away. The stunning mist early in the morning was a sight to be seen and one I wish to repeat again this year.

I would love your feedback about this image and it’s balance.
The central jetty is against the rules and the incomplete boat to the left is not ideal, The reflection is not straight either.

  • Thanks for that. I am struggling finding balance when and image is not in thirds and parts cut out but I think they can work.

You are too critical of this shot! Even with the small infractions it is beautiful! The composition as a whole is wonderful. XXSUEXX

  • Thanks Sue I am loving taking images and trying to develop composition in my head.

Some of the geatest and remembered images don’t follow the rules……in photography the only rule to follow is " immotalize the moment "

If you are talking about “Camera Club Rules” there will always be something to point out as “incorrect”

If you look at it and break it down, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Of course the reflection isn’t straight, but the fact that the pier is, let’s us believe that it is the water that is causing this aberration so we accept it.

The boat is incomplete, yes, but what is it about the boat that attracts us to it? The colour. It doesn’t have to be complete to make the red jump out.

Atmosphere, the low lying mist is probably the main aspect of what you were trying to capture and you have done that well, so you have succeeded.

You could “increase the colour” on the foliage (top right) to add a diagonal balance to the red boat, just a thought..

All in all I think it’s a wonderful shot, looks a good location to shoot early on.
