Under an Odd Moon by Cynthia Lund Torroll

pencil on paper drawing
image size: 18 1/4" diameter circle

This is my private wink at Odd Nerdrum.
It was an accident getting those fine lines that run vertically down the ‘mountains’. I drew them in with a very sharp 4H pencil and when I rubbed a much softer lead over them, they ‘appeared’.

The model: I was completely moved the first time I saw a photo of Frances Cobain by Herb Ritts in Vanity Fair. I used her for reference for a whole slew of my child drawings. Many years later, I was struck by a photo of my own niece who arrived in my life and altered it in ways unimaginable. All my friends thought my drawings were ultimately about her. I really don’t know.

My niece ~

Fantastic “wink”. This child is Nature’s child. Could Nature have an Inner Child? Why not. She not only is clothed by the beautiful mountain, but holds the full moon in her eyes. One moon becomes two. The mystery led me to wonder!

  • You’re just written a poem here Frannie ~
    thank you for your grace.

I am not sure I can remember all the intelligent things I said about this piece the first time…
It does however look great in my house…

  • No higher compliment than that Mark!
