Upon the bark

As though
stripping bark from a fallen log
tearing off piece by piece
contemplating his ancient craft
forming words within his mind
flowing from his steel pen
seizing the very essence of the word
inviting me in gentle praise,
into a manly adult freshness
spreading fungus upon the bark
reflecting his true colours
moving into my heart’s air
arousing through its essence
like a pine forest at Christmas -
yet with his
shiny tinsel fluttering in the wind -
Enticing my slumbering life
my sick mind barely all there
into the realms of playing dare
becoming a poets spice
in cautious awakening
my heart beats
blinded by the smell of man
yet unsuspecting and word drunk
his true scent
is already sticking to my hair
new words trip me
screaming whilst cutting
flattery fell me
halfway through the fall
straight into the
stinging nettle’s nest
awakening from a nightmare
I am burnt
yet grateful to escape
a poet’s real roughness
written words upon
the very rough bark
instead of beneath
the smooth gentleness
sought by the my sacred papyrus scroll
formed from within the very core.

Betty, Bravo my dear!! If this is your first poem for the year what will you do for an encore!!? You have the heart, soul, spirit and love of a poet! For you are one with the pen!! Such a BEAUTIFUL write with profound imagery from your words alone! I could feel, touch and see the elements within your poem! I do love the accompanied image! Much love and peace be with you always, Lisa XO

  • Dear Lisa, Thanks for that! Yes, its the 1st of the year and hopefully they will improve! I am learning my darling… school fees in mny ways… Thanks the photo is mine from my garden. I wrote a poem about the garden and I desribed the ‘Afrikaner-bean coffee tree’ which this is at a huge rock where I used to sit and contemplate the garden layout (20 years ago). I am glad you liked the poem, as I thought of the smell of the wood when the bark is pulled off – its essence filling… hope I conveyed that clearly… Much love and hug for the fav!

A gripping read and a delight to the thoughts of a poetess within, though lingering subtle questions come as well from the roughness spoken of… from the passing of time or fresh as a recalled memory to present. A great write Betty… with love. VVV

  • Dearest Russ thanks for your ever insightful appraisal. I am so glad you like this one, again branching out so to speak into yet another way of poetry for me… I am glad it worked! Hugs to you for the favourite! VVV
