Summertime Childhood

This is about childhood memories
First kisses
First loves
Peach juice
And golden sunsets.

I still remember hot sun.
January birthdays.
Freckles that fade.
Sunsets that taste of peach juice
Sliding
Down
My
Chin.

I danced on the front porch,
Of my favourite aunty
Feeling icy droplets
Slide down my skin
As I shook my hair
Of afternoon play.

As a little girl…
I watched the world through blue eyes.
That turned to hazel green,
Before my future came to call,
And lessons deepened my understanding of life.
I dove into a deeper truth.

My first love.
His breath smelled of summertime.
Cherry blossoms…
And first kisses.
That leave sweetness in the corners,
Of velvet lips.
Electricity fizzing between fingertips
That touch virgin skin.

I traced his heart line,
With my soft fingers.
Fleshy,
Calloused,
Raw,
Honesty.
He lied.

Lessons learned,
I tuck my pain behind my sunnies.
My childhood will forever smell of summertime.
