Now I know sunflowers are also known as black eyed susans :-)

  • Actually, while there are several similarities, they are different flowers all together. They have the same colors and are both composite flowers.

A black eyed susan has a much smaller center than a sunflower. Even small sunflowers have a larger center. I would say that’s probably the most obvious difference. Rather than a flat center, black eyed susans have a textured ball with piped detail for the center. Also the petals of a black eyed susan tend to hang back from the center, rather than go straight out. I just took some shots of some sunflowers recently I will be uploading sometime soon.

Thanks for pointing that out! Look forward to seeing your sunflowers. I think I have one, which I’ll upload, too.
