Blue Dasher by Lisa G. Putman

Dragonfly ~ Blue Dasher – Male

This little guy decided to pose for me a little bit. But, of course he would only stay for about 30 seconds at a time. He was helping me practice my timing. Thank you, dragonfly for helpig me to hone my skills. This was taken in Memphis, TN, USA in a metro area apartment complex. I love discovering wildlife in the city.

Canon EOS 3oD SLR, 70-200 F.2.8 L with 2X Extender, Handheld…a bit windy out this afternoon, but too lazy on my walk to bring the tripod.

The Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States.

Although the species name longipennis means “long wings”, the wings are not particularly long. Females do, however, have a short abdomen that makes the wings look longer in comparison.

Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Hexapoda

Order: Odonata
Suborder: Anisoptera
Family: Libellulidae
Genus: Pachydiplax
Species: P. longipennis
