Artist's Description

Blue Dasher – Male
This shot was taken in my “backyard” at our apartment complex in Memphis, TN perched on a stick on the lake’s edge.

Canon EOS 3oD SLR, 70-200 F.2.8 L with 2X Extender, Handheld…a bit windy out this afternoon, but too lazy on my walk to bring the tripod.

The Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States.

Although the species name longipennis means “long wings”, the wings are not particularly long. Females do, however, have a short abdomen that makes the wings look longer in comparison.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Hexapoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Anisoptera
Family: Libellulidae
Genus: Pachydiplax
Species: P. longipennis
Binomial name: Pachydiplax longipennis (Burmeister, 1839)
