In the book “The Art of Color” by Johannes Itten, all colors have mentally and emotionally expressive values. He states, "Yellow on red is a loud joyful noise, like trumpets on Easter Morn. Its splendor sends forth a mighty knowledge and affirmation.

Where red meets yellow, there is "red-orange, it is dense and opaque, glowing as if filled with inner warmth. The warmness of Red is intensified to fiery strength in red-orange. Passionate physical love grows forth in red-orange.

Where yellow meets orange, the yellow looks like a purer, lighter orange. The two colors together are like strong morning sun on ripening wheatfields." Yellow represents truth, understanding, and knowledge. Yellow helps us to “see the light”, and brings us to the realization of the previously hidden truth.

When the two colors are used together: Red is power, and yellow is knowledge, when they blend together to make orange, the result is proud self respect.

Johnnes Itten’s color theory is very interesting. . You can read more about it in his major work “The Art of Color” published in 1961, or by reading his digest version “Itten: The Elements of Color” in 1970.

There’s so much to look at here with seemingly so little!
But it sucks me right it. :)

  • Hi, Birgitta! I hope you are doing well! Thanks for your comments. This is very different for me, since I am usually so into realism. I wasn’t sure what kind of response it would get, but, I love the out of focus color and the leading lines of the petal’s curled edges. Thanks so much!
