Cades Cove Collection – Smoky Mountain National Park, USA

I am Lisa G. Putman. My interest in photography began early when I recieved my first camera for Christmas in grade school. It was a kodak 110 instamatic. I used this camera until I went to college. At that time, I was going on a trip to Ecuador and wanted to buy a new camera, a 35 mm Vivitar.

It was not until I graduated from college that I owned my own SLR, the first Canon Rebel to hit the market. I was in heaven! A whole new world of possibilities was open to me. I took photography classes from the college in which I was enrolled in graduate school. I was disappointed in what I learned about shooting in those classes, but I learned a great deal about the dark room. The best experience I found was by trial and error, and exchange of information with a few great friends with an interest in photography.

I craved knowledge on the subject of photography, so, I began to read every book and magazine I could find on the subject. It wasn’t until 2006 that I purchased my first digital SLR, a Canon EOS 30D. I love digital and the digital darkroom is just as much fun as the wet one (Film), at times it is more fulfilling because the results of processing are instantaneous!

Before my digital days, I worked as a portrait photographer for 3 different companies and learned a lot in the process. I gained confidence as I won local competitions and sold work at a show at the local Gallery Walk. Unfortunately, working for other people, was barely paying the bills. I began a career in custom picture framing. My new career took so much time, I never seemed to make time for my favorite hobby.

Then, my only camera died. I was unable to replace it at the time. It has only been recently I have become serious about photography once again. I crave time to spend shooting and editing my pictures. I work at becoming a better photographer every free moment I have to spare.

I’ve discovered for me, photography is not a job, it’s a journey, a life long process of learning and improving. A fulfilling experience for me.

I love shooting wildlife, animals are my favorite. I find myself in the zoo shooting captive animals frequently because I can get there quickly, when I can’t take a trip. (I only shoot animals with a camera!) I also love anything nostalgic or old, barns, abandoned buildings, anything that romanticizes the past for me.

I will continue to strive to interpret the my world the way I see it through the lens of my camera, as long as I have breath and health. I love the process.
