Today is not just any day, it’s the first one of the new year. I think there’s always something renewing about the first day of any new year. We set our sights on making resolutions to make improvements and it may go good for awhile, but most likely, we lose sight of our goals and fall behind in the race we started off running.
I have been pondering what my new year resolution might be. I would like to drop a few pounds and get more excersize, improve my outward body, but more importantly, I want to improve my inward man, my spiritual body, to be walking in accord with the Lord. The Scripture tells us that the outward man is perishing, but the spirit or inward man is imperishable when they are walking with Christ. This race I’m running is not the human ‘rat’ race as so many would describe it, mine is the race towards the goal which is heaven one day.
How do I get there? In Philippians chapter 3 it begins by telling us to ‘rejoice in the Lord’ no matter what the circumstance. This is simply to have joy for Christ, over and over and over again, joy and re-joy! There will be those in the world, the false teachers and preachers which Paul refers to as ‘dogs’ who will try and lie to you and knock you down. Satan, the enemy of God would love for every believer to stumble and fall away and will make every attempt to make that happen. This is why Paul tells us to ‘rejoice’ in the Lord, no matter what happens! It’s imperative to remain faithful to Christ and watch out who you allow to influence you in your race.
God’s church, (the people who believe) is separated from the world and the things of the world. What the world sees as valuable and needed, we see as foolish. None of these things will last forever and they certainly won’t save us unto salvation! It’s like ignoring the fact that you should have a life insurance policy in case something should ever happen. Well, it’s inevitable that something will happen sooner or later and since we don’t know when that is, how can we afford to ignore what is a fact? Some things can never be done over. Salvation is one of them.
Running a race of faith with Christ is exactly like that. The sooner you get in the race, the stronger you will be when the time does come to leave this world. To be in this race is to be assured that you have a one way invitation to heaven, a seat at the marriage supper of the Lamb. Anyone is welcome as long as they have received Christ into their heart, that’s the ticket!
This race can’t be run lazily, it’s not one that is on again and off again, it’s steady the whole time. It’s not about speed, just a need to finish! In life, only the athlete who trains and takes this seriously is the one that finishes the finish line and gets the prize. This race is no different. How many times have you remembered the loser? That’s my point. Only the strong survive this race.
If you have something in your life that is hindering you such as pride, offenses, unforgiveness, it’s time to get past them, let them go and forget what lies behind and press on toward the goal of heaven. Jesus Christ is that prize! If you love what God loves you will never stop running this race by faith. God gives us all gifts in which to use while we are running. God gives us gifts such as our time, our talents and our treasures, we don’t get these by our own good works or efforts. They are ours to share with others and bring them along in the race as well. Do you know someone who wants to get stronger this year, someone who needs Christ as their Lord and Savior in order to finish this race?
What’s the purpose of telling others about Christ? This is what Paul writes in Phil. 3:21; “He (Christ) will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.”
To one day be resurrected into a glorious body that will never grow old, never have pain or disease is God’s promise! That is a prize I find most worthwhile and this year, I intend on running this race with more faith, how about you, won’t you join me???
Do you know someone who wants to get stronger this year, someone who needs Christ as their Lord and Savior?
