Artist's Description

Elemental 1 – Earth

postwork in Photoshop cs2

An exploration into the elements inspired by Jackie’s challegne. Earth, the heaviest of the 4 ancient elements, when mixed with water is sinks to the bottom of a vessel. Conversely air in water bubbles upward, while fire rises in air and is therefore the lightest element.

The real origin of the elements lays somewhere in the Neolithic Age, when people discovered that there was only four possible ways to dispose of their dead: burial (earth), cremation (fire), sinking in water (water) or exposure to carrion birds of the air (air). All four of these funerary practices were known to the ancients, who envisioned death as a reversal of birth: a return to the Mother who brought forth all life in the world.
