Vanished landscape of the Potteries

Oil. 80×80cm

‘Experts calculated that in the heyday there were up to 4,000 bottle kilns in Stoke-on-Trent with as many as 2,000 still standing in the 1950’s. The Clean Air Act of 1953 sounded the death-knell for the smoky, coal fired oven. There are 47 still standing today – all are listed buildings.’

Vanished landscape of the Potteries belongs to the following groups:

British Painters, Cityscapes and City Skylines ~ ALL THINGS "CITY" , Feel, Don't Copy, Fine Arts, History, Industrial landscapes, Just Brown, Oil Painting, Solo Exhibition, The Best of, The Urban Environment and United Kingdom

Lovely work Vicky. Guess this is in Staffs??? I visited there many years ago. The terrain reminds me of Lowry. You’ve made the pollution pretty…I guess those smoke ghosts can look beautiful too.

wow! This must have taken ages to paint. It is wonderful!

  • vickymount replied

It did take a while to paint! I always say… I’ll paint something smaller and less detailed next time and then end up painting something just as complicated.

this is brilliant – grim but beautiful – the mind-boggling layers of terrace houses and smoke create almost surreal and dreamlike scene.

I’m in a bit of a rut with a painting at the moment. It’s along the same lines as this…your comment on this painting has made me see the next one through less jaded eyes. You came along just at the right moment. And for that….a big thankyou. vixx

What a wonderful way you portray the industrial heydays of the potteries, something about the use of curvyness that softens the reality of the harsh atmospheric conditions
