The most amazing and vibrant couple I have ever had the pleasure to know and deal with! I was lucky enough to be working up in the Whitsundays, on Hamilton Island, as the photographer and used to get over to Dent at least once a week! And I loved it! I will see if I can dig up some more information – their life and lifestyle was pretty amazing too! They created Coral Art and sold their own jewellery they made from the sea and the island. And both so down to earth too! Opposite Hamilton Island, Queensland, Australia. Taken approximately 1990.

beautiful shot and wonderful people…… loved reading your little story with this……

  • Ta Wendy! Lean made her own glasses (and all her jewellery) and Bill’s hat is all authentic! Those were the days but i doubt that I could live the same way these days! Even if I am still hyperactive!! lol! I am glad you enjoyed the story!! :)) They were great folk!

I remember these two were quite the hit years ago. Lovely to see this great shot of them.

  • Ahhh, that is great Rosie-star! I am glad you remember them! A lot of people used to say they had seen them on TV, etc but back then I never saw a lot of tv as I was always out shooting! I was very lucky to know them personally and they were both lovely people! I still have the earrings that were a gift from them many years ago, black coral, and they were all handmade! They created some beautiful pieces!! What did you know of Bill & Lean? I would love to know! :))

I recall they had quite a love story between them, and fulfilled what we all fantasize about. Going to live on their own little island, and among other things, make handcrafts to sell to visitors. I think my sister even visited them!! I must ask.

  • That sounds about right, spot on!! I would have loved to have seen the show about them! But guess I was lucky enough to know them! Funny how we think sometimes, aye? When did your sister go to visit? She might remember the chicken-legged photographer!! :)) (but back then my legs were brown not lobster red!!) lol!

  • Well, yes!! They used to make people smile too!!! I used to be able to say I have chicken legs in japanese, not grammatically correct apparently!! :)) Used to get lots of smiles!! :))

I was lucky enough to meet Bill and his wife on my fisrt trip to the Islands in 1984.
At that stage Bill was selling coconut palms, and had a craftsman from Melanesia come over every year and carve wooden statues for them.
Bill told me he took up a 99 year lease on dent Island in 1939.

  • Hey Phil, that rings many bells!! And now a lot more memories come flooding back! He was still selling coconut palms when I was there too!! And whenever we would go over to Dent, we would get free coconuts and milk, and if we were lucky, Bill would let us having a go at drilling and breaking them (and then everyone would get a piece of fresh coconut)! A lot of the time on the island was spent talking with Bill, as Lean would be in the Coral Art Hut selling the handicrafts and jewellery (people didn’t want photos in the hut, generally!) … I remember the lease too now – but I believe there is a golf course there now, or there had been plans on building one. Do you remember Prince, the albino peacock? Thanks Phil, that was a great flood of good memories! We would go over from Hamo in either the speed boat or the War Canoe, we would lay anchor at the front of the Island and Bill would meet us out on the water! Wow! Thanks Phil! Did you ever see any documentaries on Bill and Lean?

Ooh, I thought I’d commented when I saw this great couple, but I think I got waylaid surfing the Internet and reading about them as you got my interest up:-) Seems they are still around and in their nineties!

  • They were an interesting couple and so full of life, Kasia! Unfortunately, they are no longer with us – this was taken in the 1990’s, twenty years ago now… where does the time go? :)
