Moonrise on Melrose © Vicki Ferrari
This photograph was taken on the Melrose Road, Albert (central New South Wales, Australia), in the 1980’s. This is a scan of the 8X12 print in one of my earlier portfolios – there has only been basic editing done in photoshop, to remove the inevitable dust and scratches that are prominent with negative use (which become really apparent once you have scanned the image!). Apart from that, what you see is what it is! This is one of my favourites. It was even used in a country music CD a few years ago! I was a bit impressed by that – chuffed almost! (yes, I was chuffed, not almost!) You can take pity on the person that was in the car with me, driving home at night and having to stop! I have to take a photo! (and how often do we do that?!) I hope you like this and thank you for looking and reading! Vicki Ferrari

NickH
I love this – as well as the image its the sense of driving at night, then stopping in the middle of nowhere in perfect silence and capturing the moment. – cheers – Nick
Vicki Ferrari replied
you got it nick! thanks for the comments! and it is very quiet out there, in the middle of nowhere – bar the roos and snakes!! (it isn’t always a pleasant experience, is it, being the non-photographer in a car with photographer-all ready with camera! if you know what i mean!!) :))) vicki

GREAT CAPTURE, I LOVE THE WAY THE HEADLIGHTS FADE OUT INTO THE DARKNESS. THE REASON, HAVING TO STOP TO TAKE A P,,,,,PHOTOGRAPH, IS BETTER THAN HAVING TO STOP FOR A P,,,,,,POLICE MAN, OR A P,,,,,PEE. LOL BOB :) OH YEAH, THIS ONE WENT INTO FAVES. :)
Vicki Ferrari replied
Thank you SmokeyDogSocks! Yes, much better to stop for a p…photograph! It costs too much to stop for a p…policeman! And, depending on who you are and what their sense of humour is like, it is much less embarassing than stopping for a p….peeee! (I have had someone reverse and shine their headlights on me…... nice friends that I have, aye?!) I love your comments and thanks for the fave!
SMOKEYDOGSOCKS
LOL LOL I’VE HAD FRIENDS LIKE THAT TOO. DON’T YOU JUST LOVE UM? LOL AND YOU’RE WELCOME. BOB

Vicki Ferrari replied
Spot on Rick! The only problem is the addiction to RB!!!!
SMOKEYDOGSOCKS
I’D HAVE TO SAY, TIN-KETTLING IS A NEW ONE ON ME. BOB
Vicki Ferrari replied
It is an Aussie tradition, Bob. After you have been married for a couple of months,20 people squeeze into 1 car (I exaggerate but not by much!) and sneak onto your property in the wee hours of the morning (generally after the Rabbit Trap has closed!), sneak into your house, assemble, in the dark, around your bed and then proceed to ring cowbells and any other LOUD bells that they have managed to get their hands on! ....after you peel yourself off the ceililng, you then go and join them for drinks (very thirsty work!) while someone else then ransacks your house, pulls off the labels off the tinned food (and later is is like…. what do you think this one is dear? ...shaking tin… peaches or baked beans?), fill your wardrobes with baby powder and other unmentionables! If you are UNLUCKY enough to own a waterbed, they might also turn it off at the wall without telling you too….. Then, if you are lucky enough, and someone else is unlucky enough to have also got recently married, you join them and go and do it to someone else! Does that sound at all familiar? Normally you wake up the next morning with very sore heads… Good thing that once we were young and patient because if someone did that to me know, well…. I wouldn’t be entertaining them for starters!
SMOKEYDOGSOCKS
THAT’S A FIRST FOR ME, SOUNDS LIKE GENERAL MAYHEM. I’D HAVE TO PEEL MYSELF OFF THE CEILING ALSO. BUT, THEN I’D HAVE TO KICK SOME BUTT, I DON’T DRINK. LOL BOB
Vicki Ferrari replied
I don’t anymore either, silly enough as it is without adding anything artificial! Must be just an Aussie tradition then. It was around when my mum and dad got married too. It still amazes me how we didn’t hear them drive up… they use to leave their lights off, I know that! I don’t know if they do that anymore! With new DUI laws, probably not! Vicki :)))
SMOKEYDOGSOCKS
WELL, I SURE HOPE THEY DON’T. MY PARENTS USED TO BE ABLE TO SNEEK UP ALSO. I HAD A WINDOW THAT WAS UP HIGH WITH MY BUNK BED AND I COULD SEE THEM COMING FROM DOWN THE STREET, IF I WAS LOOKING FOR THEM THAT IS. LOL BOB
Vicki Ferrari replied
Could they see you seeing them? I know that my brother and I normally didn’t HEAR them! We lived on acres and would turn the music up full boar…. no neighbours to annoy… annoyed Mum and Dad though, to no end! My ears can still ring and not from the music!
MichelleR

SaRaHKnOwDoG
This is great Vicki. What was the exposure time ? Car head lights and moon obviously, did you use any other lighting ?
Love this one.
Vicki Ferrari replied
Hi Sarah, can’t remember the exposure time as it was film, and taken about 20 years ago! It was a more than a few seconds (ie more than 1). I used the car (switched off) as a tripod. When it was printed, it was delliberately over exposed as the it was not as bright as what it could be. Yes, it was car headlights and moon! And the gravel road just absorbed the lighting! I was really impressed when I got the pics back (back in the ‘old’ days
Digital makes the process so much easier except that you have to W A I T for the image to process before you can take another shot! Nice to meet you Sarah! Vicki
SaRaHKnOwDoG
Yep, very cool lighting. Thanx for all the info Vicki. Always interested with long exposures. Would like to get back into em some day soon. Then i will find out how digital handles a 5 hr exposure ?? And if it will ?
Vicki Ferrari replied
Make sure your battery is WELL charged for that length of time! Let me know if it handles it…. :))) I don’t think the exposure on this was that long, I would say max 2 or 3 minutes or less. If you shoot on RAW (what camera do you use again?), it allows you a bit of leeway too, with digital… Good luck!! Vicki :))))
SaRaHKnOwDoG
I got a point and shoot at mo vicki : ( Thats my LOT ! Saving for the elusive digi SLR. Got old film cams, but don’t use em.
Kristina K
you could be on my road at night if you weren’t in another state…lol..great spooky road, as they all are at night ;lol.:)) k
Vicki Ferrari replied
I think the driver was more annoyed with me than I was spooked – having to stop and wait while I took a photo!!! One has to have patience if they are going to travel with a photographer, yes???!!
:)))))You must live in a nice part of the country if it looks the same!! How are things down there? Vicki
Kristina K
things are quiet for the time being thanks vicki, and yes we do live in a lovely spot, my road has a tad more trees though..lol..yes a driver would have to have patience, thats why trudi and i or rosemaree and i go out photographing so as we can yell stop and the brake goes on, so we can all take a pic…lol…me i would rather drive though…lol. :)) k
Vicki Ferrari replied
Might test your patience to be in a car with me then!!!! :)))) Murder on the old bush road… woman slain and found with a big lens shaped dent in the middle of her forehead!!! :)))

Moorey
Well, yer. I was confused. You clever gal, digitising your film shots. mmm I haven’t even gone near that yet. I thought maybe I was behind on technology, you remember the old digital SLR days?
Vicki Ferrari replied
ummm, yes!!! Have been shooting with SLR’s since 1980 basically! And even earlier on those old 110films!!! (I am feeling so OLD now, thank you Moorey…..you’ll keep!!!!) LOL (and how old am I?!!)
Vicki Ferrari replied
About to get older soon too….. oh no, paint another wrinkle on the crinkle! getting new glasses!! Losing more patience? Yep, it’s ok to get another year older!! LOL

This is incredible. You would just have to stop to take this! I’m assuming that it was the car’s headlights lighting up the road. Great to see good use of the “urban tripod”.
Vicki Ferrari replied 23 days ago
Spot on, WP!! Yes, it was the car’s headlights! It was a wonderful night! Love your terminolgy – urban tripod! or should that be rural tripod?!! :))
