Yiddie Remembered © Vicki Ferrari

This is in memory of my gorgeous Yiddie (1991-1999). He was like my baby! I have so many photos and images of him but this was one of my favourites, taken on an old pentax with 50mm lens and a really low aperture. I still miss him, 10 years later! But he has a home in a corner of my heart that is never empty of him! He was a nine kilo monster and such a gentle lad – he was part feral and a friend rescued him from a coal mine in Collinsville – and I am so thankful that he was and that he was part of my life.

He’s beautiful – love that wild broad nose.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

yes, he did have a broad nose – i think that was the feral in him! he was a huge gentle monster! he was slim yet he weighed 9 kilos – it used to be so much fun giving him worming tablets! i am putting one of him on soon, when he was a kittie and his ears were huge! but he grew into them! thanks for your kind comments tama!

he was a beautiful boy Vicki . they are our fur kids and I don’t think folk understand the strong bond we form with them. I am so sorry you have lost him….he is only a memory away Vicki and will always be in your heart ! love Jane

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

thanks jane, for your kind words! yes, it is a strong bond…. even writing the blurb, i was getting emotional! he was my really good mate but i know he has that special place in a corner of my heart, reserved only for him – where he lives! thank you for being so kind and sweet! xo vicki

This photo is perfection! He looks like a big cat like a jaguar or something, so cool. Great shot and tribute to him! :)

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

thank you eelsblueellen! he was a big cat (but not jaguar size!) – his nose was broad and i think that had something to do with being part feral (his parents, i gather? he wasn’t). i found a photo once in a magazine that looked a bit like him and i think it was an asian cat. do you know which variety i mean? thanks for you kind comments and glad that i posted his photos! :)) vicki (yiddie would be happy too, i am sure!)

What a great photo. I share your loss when it comes to these wonderful animals. I have ten rescues, and have had many through the years. All were special in their own way. This is an absolutely gorgeous cat and you can tell he was a big one by that wide nose.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

thank you yimusjane, for your kind words! how do you handle so many rescues? it took me so long to get another cat and even then, sully was given to me – and i am glad (except for when he eats the furniture and the skirting boards) that he is in my life now!

I know what you mean about the nose being broad, look at this neighborhood kitty of mine, he looks black panther-ish and you can’t see in this shot but his fangs are super long! Strange. :)

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

Thanks for the kind comment! Vicki :))

  • missmoneypenny

    missmoneypenny

Yes, lens swap is a problem isn’t it? I have many lenses from my old slr which I would love to use but they are not compatible with my digital camera

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

so frustrating! I do find that with my old nikon lens that aren’t compatible, i can still take photos but the light meter doesn’t work – all i do then is look at the photo and judge what lighting it might need. have you ever tried that?

Yiddie was a very beautiful friend with such expressive and lovely eyes! This image is a wonderful tribute to him! What would we do without our animal family?

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

He was so beautiful, inside and out, and still is beautiful in spirit! Sometimes it can hurt too much to think about what we would do without our animal family but they bring us so much joy while they are here. I still get very emotional about Yiddie and it has been ten years! I have to remember how much joy he bought me and how happy he seemed to be!! Vicki

  • MichelleR

    MichelleR

Yiddie grew up to be a very handsome man. This is a beautiful tribute to him. Nice job.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

Thank you Michelle! Do you think he looks a bit like Festus? (apart from the fact that he has 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose, whiskers and fur?)
I think the eyes have a similar expression, I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is… Vicki

  • MichelleR

    MichelleR

I think it’s the expression in their eyes. Both Yiddie and Festus have very powerful and intense eyes. You can almost read their minds just by looking in their eyes.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

That might be it!! Lucky for Yiddie that digital wasn’t around then!

  • Tamara Kenneally

    Tamara Kenneally

Yiddie was beautiful! What a glorious cat. Your depth of field is great on this shot. He was a lucky boy to have you!

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

And I was lucky to be blessed with his company for the time that I was!! I still miss him… we never forget, aye? Thanks for your kind comments Tamara! Vicki :)))

  • MDossat

    MDossat

Gorgeous kitty. What kind is he?

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

He came from a coal mine up in Collinsville (Nth QLD) and my friend rescued him and bought him home. I just thought of him as a tabby. What do you think? I have seen some asian cats (can’t remember the name of them) that he really resembled – they were large as was Yiddie (short for Yidiot, Idiot!! He was a character too!). He looks proportional, and was, but he weighed about 9 kilos – he was a big boy! By bub!! I would welcome any info! Thanks MDossat! Vicki :))

He certainly looks oriental – maybe some abyssinian. What a lovely tribute. My son and I lost our Burmese last year to a hit and run (Pugsy Merlin) and we miss him terribly almost everyday. Sadly I don’t have any lovely pics of him like this.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

Others have said that he looked like he might have a bit of abyssinian – and thank you, for your kind comments! I don’t know that we ever get over losing our pets but I try to remember how much joy we brought each other – and they always live in a special corner of our hearts. I think it is good for kids to have pets to learn how to live with loss but the funny thing is, it seems to get a lot harder to deal with when we get older. I would have thought it was meant to get a bit easier when you got used to it, but no. Do you know what I mean by that?

  • eclectica

    eclectica

I do – kids are far more resilient I think. We tend to dwell on stuff and become maudlin. My son’s philosophy is that Pugsy lived – he was an awesome cat and much loved – and he only derives joy from the memories.

Thanks for sharing this Vicki. It’s brought quite a response from people, and that’s what animals can do – show us that we’ve more in common than we first think.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

Thank you so much Enivea! Yiddie will never be forgotten, not as long as I am alive!! Too true, re your comments! :)))

Truly Perrrrrfect capture. Boy I’ve been there with our cats…we had six indoor cats and now are down to three…we miss them all…I put a dedication to the cats we love slide show together if you want to see it and I can give you the website and details…What a noble cat he is/was.

  • Vicki Ferrari replied

Thank you George, and I can tell you truly understand!! Yes, please send me the link to your website with the details re your dedication to your cats! Would love to see it! Maybe Yiddie and your cats are looking down on us now, saying “silly bloody humans, being so emotional, we aren’t even dead! We are still here…..” (smiling here!)
    Ta George!! :)
