The Gomantong Caves are an intricate limestone cave system of Gomantong Hill. Situated in the eastern lowlands of Sabah, in the district of Sandakan, Malaysia, Borneo. The Gomantong Cave (southwest of Sandakan) is divided into two caves: the Simud Hitam and the Simud Putih.
This is the Simud Hitam or Black cave, and the ceiling reaches 90m in places.
The caves are home to many animals, and have a large population of cockroaches & bats. The caves are renouned for their valuable swiftlet nests (trying saying that fast :) ) which are harvested twice a year, for bird’s nest soup.
