Took my second ever shot of 2011 only on the 9th day of the year :-(

Took off at 4:30 AM about 60Km out of town for a shoot. Lessons learnt:
1. Sun rises a little later in winters … like at 6:15 AM doofus!!
2. The sun rises in an arc of approx 30 degrees over the course of the year and so don’t plan your shoot on the basis of a sunrise you saw about 6 months back.

Other than that – was quite happy with the shoot (even if we didn’t get glorious colours – I did break out the Cokin Tobacco filter).

Nikon D300
Sigma 10-20 at 17mm
f/13 at 1/60 secs -0.33 Ev
WB set to Shade (to play up the warmth)
Cokin Gradual Tobacco T1 – just used it to really play up the lovely morning glow.
Single RAW file cropped.

    Beautiful shot Vikram!! 4:30am ouch!!

  • LOL – 4:30 outta the door means a much earlier wake up.
The bummer was that I forgot to switch off the alarm and it rang at 3:45 AM the next morning too (today morning!!!).

What a beautiful atmosphere you have captured, Vikram! Love the mist and the format suits it very well!

  • Thank you so much Jo!
I started thinking about this format once I saw a 6ft printed pano … looks amazing!!
Going to get this to 3ft atleast.

Oh, what beautiful color, Vikram!! So gorgeous!!
I wish I had your energy to get up that early! Do you usually have a spot in mind that you’re going to photograph when you plan such days or do you just get up and go?

  • Happy New Year Ann!!
Oh – I don’t have that much energy … just really wanted to get back to shooting!
I do usually have a place in mind – and usually its a place I’d have visited during the day. I tend to mentally file away places and scenes and then when I think the light/weather will be right – I head out to that place. Sometimes I luck out, but in most cases it’s a total waste and I go back home wondering why I got up at 4 AM. Sunsets are much easier :-)

  • In this case – I was actually hoping for heavy ground mist as this place has a few hills I could have climbed up on to get the mist below.
PS: I do have to head there earlier as dawn shoots mean I get to my spot when it’s pitch dark and wait for the sunrise.
