Vembanad Lake (Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol) is India’s longest lake and one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes
It lies at sea level, and is separated from the Arabian Sea by a narrow barrier island. The Vembanad wetland system covers an area of over 1512 km². Canals link the lake to other coastal lakes to the north and south. Several rivers flow into the lake and it is over 14km wide at it’s widest point (which is about 2 Km to the left of this pic)
It’s now a major tourist destination for visitors around the world – who come here to tour in the unique houseboats that ply on this lake and the entire wetland system (might have some pics of that up later).
