Finally put the Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D to use … I’d got it hoping to use it for candid portraiture (not something it’s weight makes it very conducive to!!).
Here’s the first try with it.

Had to read up in the significance of the white ash on his forehead

Bhasma (The word for the white ash)
Hindu worship is an integration of rites and rituals each having a symbolic significance. The smearing of Bhasma is one of the important aspects that go with the worshipers of Lord Shiva. It is usually applied on the forehead. Some others like the ascetics have it smeared all over their body.

The word ‘ash’ cannot be taken in its literal sense that any form of ash can be used for the purpose. Bhasma is the ash from the Homa (sacrificial fire) where in a variety of special woods along with ghee (clarified butter) and other herbs are offered to the Lord in the Homa pit.

The ‘Bhasma’ would mean “that by which our sins are destroyed and the Lord is remembered.” ‘Bha’ would mean ‘bhartsanam’ (“to destroy”) and ‘sma’ would mean ‘smaranam’ (to remember). Hence a special significance goes into the application of Bhasma which would mean the destruction of evil and cherished remembrance of the Lord.

Very nice work…and yes I can see the lens is very clean and clear! How close can you get re a focus with this lens and what is the lowest aperture? I’m thinking of getting this lens.

    Debra

  • Thanks so much Debra!
Yep – amazingly sharp. I think the minimum focus distance is about 6 ft and it goes from f/2.8 till a minimum of f/22.
You’ll love this lens – just be warned that it is HEAVY. Around my neck, I walked supporting the lens with one hand at all times.

This is fantastic Vikram! You must be so very pleased with your new toy! Wonderful portrait and I enjoyed reading the info as well :)

  • Thanks Shelly – so happy I got the thumbs up from you on a portrait!!
Well, I was searching for something sharp .. and while the 105 Micro is as sharp as it gets, it didn’t really lend itself to candid portraiture which is what I wanted to do. I got a good deal on this one and jumped at it …
