I so wanted to swat this damn insect with my shoe!! Just to keep it still for a moment!!

I spent the better part of an hour following this gorgeous dragon around – as I’d focus and check the composition, he’d fly off. Well I finally got 3 decent pics!!

As is.

Nikon D80
Nikkor 105 AF-S VR Micro
f/13; 1/60; ISO 100; On Camera – Flash on TTL (to freeze any movement and to get a catchlight).

And another one I got:

Greetings Vikram; I know what you are saying, I have had the very same problem with these dragonflys, they do not like to be photographed ! You have done a great job in the capture of these fast moving insects ! Well done and he looks beautiful and colorful with great details !

  • Thank you once again Steve!
You have no idea how close I was to giving up so many times …. finally switched to manual focus which allowed me to be faster (counterintuitive – but it worked)

Ahahaha! Great ‘description’! They are difficult to photograph aren’t they, but your time and patience really paid off in this case because this is a gorgeous macro of a gorgeous insect! Perfect details, composition, DOF, and colours…… it Vikram :)

  • Thanks Shelly!! Yep – this is the little so-and-so I was telling you about!! Added another pic below the first one – I liked that composition too (the triangles).

A great thing to learn in Photography… Persistence, patience, and prayer. very nice capture. The detail is beautiful and you have a great bokeh going on here. Superb work. Now put your feet up.

  • Persistence and Patience for me ….. that Dragon fly must have been the one praying – cos I very nearly slipped my shoe off several times to throw at it!!!
Thank you so much my friend!!!

I can sympathise with your frustration … but at least you did manage to get some shots, which is more than I have been able to do. Well done !!!

  • LOL!! Thank you so much. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve gone chasing after these and come up with no shots – till I almost believed that one needed ether or some spray to keep these still!!
Persistence and patience ….. my friend Shawn said it in the comment above!

What an absolutely amazing shot – not just of the dragonfly but also the web which must have managed to slow him down just long enough for you to take the shot – lol. Just brilliant – so glad you persisted and we got to see the end result.

  • Thank you so much Lianne for such a kind comment!! It might have been the web – but whatever it was I’m glad I was able to fire off a few shots!!

Have you tried a can of liquid nitrogen? :-) No, neither have I, but it would come handy, wouldn’t it? Also your camera’s 3fps can come handy… Nonetheless, great shots! very nice DOF and composition on all!

  • Thanks George!! I can imagine my explanation to airport security – LOL!!!
Nitrogen would perhaps kill the poor thing with cold though, wouldn’t it?
The 3 fps is ok when I’m not using the flash – otherwise pretty pointless. I was using the flash as the first couple I took looked kinda flat without a catchlight in the eyes.
