Yet another alcohol related image from me ….. promise there’s nothing more to the story here!

Taken with a SB800 flash fired from behind a black acrylic sheet which was kept about 1.5 ft behind the bottle. Also pointed the SB600 (snooted) down held far above the upright bottle.
RAW image processed in CS3 – I added a slight vignette and some dodge ‘n’ burn.

Nikon D80
SB800 & SB600 Speedlights
Nikkor 105 AF-S VR
f/10 and 1/125sec ISO 100

The flash was actually behind the sheet? Interesting….I love that you have explained the whole set up……I always learn so much from you Vikram! This is fabulous! How you have set up the lighting is absolutely perfect. Great composition as well, and I love your title ;) Now crack that second one and enjoy!

  • Hey Shelly – thanks for the fav and lovely comment!
Yep fired from behind – the idea being it only lights the edges of the glass and leaves no reflections and hot-spots (I use this setup for all glass shots). The empty was lit by the flash above (very, very low power). There was a reflection of the set-up on the acrylic at the bottom of the frame – that’s why I added the vignette to hide it.

Bet that bottle didn’t last long after all the work setting the shot up. Thirsty work.

  • It’s gone! … and there’s no more!!
More’s my irritation when I noticed that the bottle was a smidgen off center (look closely at “Carlsberg” – it’s not centered to the camera).

    Excellent work Vikram.
    Great lighting.
I have a few beer shots but nowhere as good as this.

  • Hey thanks for dropping by Richard!

Where did you get the acrylic sheet from? And you shouldn’t have mentioned the off centered thing mister!

  • I got it from a guy who used black acrylic in making trophies/momentos for me (work related) – but it can be any opaque material.
Yeah – that darned label is a bit off – and just as I finished the bottle!! Aaaargh!!!

WOW, Beautiful Shot Vikram. thanks for all the explanation on how!

  • Thanks Nat – the ‘how’ isn’t that big a secret! This is just a DIY method to creat rim-lighting. The strobist blog is where I start off and build from there with a little experimentation.
