Peace

Amazing what a long exposure, a change of WB and about 15 mins can do to a scene …..

I had been struggling with light seepage issues on my Cokin-type 10-stop filter (See Here ). I solved it by using a scrunchie (not sure what they’re called around the world – but see the pic far below – keeps my lens nice and cosy – LOL!)

Nikon D80
Sigma 10-20 @ 13mm
Hitech 10 stop (3.0) ND filter
f/9.5 30 secs ISO 100 WB Auto.

Low-tech solution to light seepage:

LOL!! – I really shouldn’t post a snapshot of this beach ever.
Here’s one I found on the web:

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Not peaceful and not serene is it?
I took this pic towards the top right where you can see a few rocks.

  • Maria Moro

    Maria Moro

oh my!!! this is so serene & so pleasing to my senses…. a magic shot Vikram… well done….

Before I even looked at your title the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this was….....ahhhhh…....peace :) This is so very beautiful, and peaceful and magical and wonderful Vikram :) I am still trying to work on landscape shots I promise. I’ve done some over the last week but not worthy of showing you….especially after viewing this! And by the way…..nice scrunchie ;)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Ahhhh… you’re the best Shelly!! I know you’ll crack landscape shots once you try em!!
See my reply to Steve above on exactly how ‘peaceful’ this place gets later in the day – LOL!!

  • parmi

Wow Vikram, this is such an incredible shot! Love how you have achieved it too. Sometimes the simplest solutions bring the greatest results!! :)

  • Aileen David

    Aileen David

Same place as “I love being a photographer”? The colors as all different; a different kind of serenity.
    ...Ingenious solution, by-the-way:)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Hi Aileen – yes same place. Just 10 mins or so later.
The colours are different as this is what the camera thinks the White Balance should be – I set it on Auto White Balance. I find that often with sunrise and sunset pics – you definitely need to set white balance manually.

  • monocotylidono

    monocotylidono

A scrunchie is even better than my leg-warmer idea ;-) Excellent result!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Yeah well – we don’t get cold enough here to get leg warmers and when you suggested a leg warmer, I thought “Big broad Scrunchie should also do” – so it is very much your idea!! Thank you!!

    Anthony Mancuso

  • Vicki Ferrari

    Vicki Ferrari

Love this Vikram! And love the scrunchie effect!!!! Very very clever!! And so peaceful!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

LOL!! – Got the idea from a leg-warmer suggestion on my previous shot I posted. Though I’ve since been advised to change the filter holder which should solve the issue completely!

  • Vicki Ferrari

    Vicki Ferrari

That would ruin the shot all together – go the scrunchie!!!!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    :-)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    Thank you so much Ursula.
With a camera one can find beauty anywhere – as one can see very clearly in your pics too!

  • Maureen Maliha

    Maureen Maliha

wow, the difference of the beach is amazing! Glad you shared both- they tell different stories, but confess—id go to the beautiful, peaceful one :-)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

LOL!! I wondered about that – shattering mental pics of a lovely beach. ..... but just had to share how much the camera hides and how there’s beauty no matter where.

Fabulous work my very talented friend. This is absolutely brilliant. I love the emptiness of the place. You did well to get it before the people moved in. Early morning? This is going into my favs. wonderful. BTW, I love the scrunchy. What a fabulous solution. A new business I think… fashion for the camera. LOL!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    Thank you so much Shawn!!
Early? – I’ll say – I was there when it was still dark. The moment the sun peeks out, the hordes arrive!
Hmmm… maybe I should go with coloured scrunchies??

  • Rebecca Cozart

    Rebecca Cozart

    Beautiful work.

    Thank you so much Rebecca!!

  • Suellen Cook

    Suellen Cook

Such a great shot, truly can’t believe its the same beach….you must have to get there early

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    Thank you so much!
Yes – you need to get there while it’s still dark and wait for the pre-dawn colours. This one though was taken a little after the sun was up and so the colours are missing

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

Such a beautiful minimalist landscape that truly evokes tranquility! Hard to believe it is the place in the comment image!!!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

LOL!! It is quite a difference isn’t it?
The place I took this pic is at the far top of the pic – close to the docks.
Would love to visit a pristine beach where it was easier to make such pics …. soon!!

Aloha Vikram, this is featured today not only for the surreal beauty of your image, but also for your photojournalism as well, the images above are astounding and I applaud your efforts to eliminate the distractions and isolate the subject :)))

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so very much Sharon.
This does mean a lot more to me than you could possibly know.
It’s something I learnt from my father – to find beauty where there apprently isn’t any.

  • Sharon Mau

    Sharon Mau

Also, the light in your image has the extraordinary effect of causing the image to appear concave. It is fascinating.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

LOL!! The vignetting I get from long exposures on the 10-20 do tend to make the image look that way. It can easily be corrected at the RAW stage – but I like it!

  • TokikoAnderson

    TokikoAnderson

    Long struggle paid off.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks! Actually on reading this, another RB member helped me with a more professional solution (I just need to buy a single filter holder as that apparently doesn’t have the gap).

    10 stops it great !
i got my new 4 stops from Ebay and really thinking about 8 or 10 …
    Amazing lights !

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    Thank you so much!!
I did go with a Cokin-type 10-stop. But I’d still reccomend either the Hoya or the B+W screw in filters for the reasons I’ve written about here.

  • micklyn

    micklyn

This image is stunning!! and i love your lowtech solution and your sharing, I learn something every time I visit your gallery (( :

  • Wayne Pearson

    Wayne Pearson

This is a masterpiece Vikram, and yes scrunchie is what we call it too, thanks for the tip.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Wayne – you are waay too kind!
PS: Ralph has suggested a more elegant solution than the scrunchie – get a single filter holder (my present one is a 3 filter holder that I’ve sawed off the front off to be able to use it on the ultra-wide.)

  • biddumy

    biddumy

Excellent scene like a dream sequence!!!

Thank you so much … Yeah – that 10-stop filter gives a lovely dreamy look when there’s water involved!
