Henna'd Lace

Henna'd Lace

Henna is used pretty extensively to decorate women’s hands during weddings in India. It’s called Mehindi in India

At the mehndi ceremony, the future bride has her hands and feet intricately patterned with a paste which is a recipe of henna, oil, lemon juice and some water tinted with tea. The application of mehndi or henna takes about four hours to complete. Ideally, the bride-to-be should not wash her hands until the paste has completely dried.

Mehndi has great significance in all Eastern wedding traditions, and no wedding is complete without the decoration of the bride’s hands and feet – in many cultures on both the front and back of the hands right up to the elbow, and on the bottom half of the legs. The mehndi night is something like a hen night in the West, with all the bride’s female friends and relatives getting together to celebrate.

Mehndi signifies the strength of love in a marriage. The darker the mehndi, the stronger the love.

I’m familiar with this work, because I grew up in India. There is grace in your depiction.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much David – for the lovely comment and fav! The grace isn’t mine I’m afraid – the bride has a lot of bearing on it!!

Oh Vikram! This is fabulous! The henna work is so beautiful but the way you have captured is so stunning….as David above has said there is grace in this image. Technically the composition is wonderful and the lighting is pure perfection! I LOVE this :)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Shelly!! The grace is the Bride’s, the beauty is the henna pro’s, the composition is mine and the lighting courtsey Ms Photoshop & Co – LOL!! It was outdoors and I was stuck without my beloved flashguns (it would have been so simple with them) – so shot it as close to the lighting I wanted and used the burn tool rather generously to get the dynamic range I wanted.

  • TickerGirl

    TickerGirl

Great patterns! Who paints these for the bride?

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Monika!! I’ve updated the description to include how it’s done. There’s a link I’ve put in which shows someone actually applying Henna. It’s freehand and each design is different. The person is usually a professional who comes in for the Mehndi night.

astounding composition my friend! one of your best! Shelly has really hit the nail on the head, elegant & graceful. Those hads are stretched open honestly yet they have beauty because of the way you have shot this! wow! wow! wow!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Nic!! The grace is the brides and I can’t take credit for anything graceful here :-))
    Really glad you liked this!!

Am so, so glad that you like this Johanne!!
PS: I did help the lighting along a little (serves me right for carrying only half the kit).

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

This is soooo beautiful, something I have long admired! The patterns are fantastic!
Can you tell us about its significance?

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Joanne – I’ve updated the description to include more information on its significance as well as on how it’s applied.
The details can get very, very intricate (freehand) and usually you’d have the bride’s face henna’d on one hand and the grooms on the other.

Wow, love the image! Your lighting is superb! Oops, I just read the above comments on lighting, oh, well it works!!!! lol! My daughter had heard that the bride doesn’t work until the henna has worn off – is this true of the culture as well? Thanks for sharing, I find it so interesting, learning about other cultures from RB friends!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

LOL!!! – Well I just shot a very, very similar pic last weekend (another wedding) – I used flash to get this effect there – just won’t post it here as this one’s already up (identical really – just a different design and a different brides hands)
The henna lasts only about 5-6 days – so yeah, they don’t work during that time.

A stunning capture my wonderful friend. Not much I can say that hasn’t already been said. I agree with Johanne really. The delicacy is beautiful, like lace. You live in a fantastic place full of wonderful traditions like this. A superb image.
