Green isn't always the colour of money

Man sleeping on the pavement in the French Quarter of Pondicherry.

I was struck by the complimentary colours in the scene while driving by and stopped to take a few pics. Then the sadness took over.

Pondicherry was a French colony till as recently as 1963. Read more here

Incredible pic … as you say fabulous colours and composition but oh, so sad. We see loads of this here in SA and the worst is when one becomes hardened to it. Thanks for sharing : )

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Heather! I’m really glad this pic got the attention it did eventually get.

I pray that we never become hardened to such sights. That would mean the loss of our humanity.

    monocotylidono

Speechless. Unbelievable capture! Another National Geographic shot!!!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

George, Nat Geo (even the website) would be beyond my wildest dreams. Personally, I find myself troubled taking these shots. Am I exploiting those less fortunate? But I do take them and I’m glad it made a number of people think.

Incredible image Vikram, pleasing to the eye, but yet sad to the soul, powerful stuff my friend :))

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you Simone! Yes, not one of those shots that leaves you happy.

Great shot Vikram – wonderful colours and a powerful message. Nice work :)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Clare – glad you got the message and that it spoke to you.

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

Wow, amazing photo! The colors are so bold and complimentary including the covers used by the individual! But that figure makes the whole image so striking and sad as well!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Joanne! Your comments are always so kind and encouraging!

  • Shoaib .

    Shoaib .

wow vikram .. you know how to take a great shot man

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Cheers Shoaib! I hope it fit into the idea you had behind Unity?

  • Nathalie Chaput

    Nathalie Chaput

    WOW… Awesome shot Vikram!

I agree with George, National Geographic

  • Vikram Franklin replied

    :-)))))) I’m not that sure!
But yeah – I like this pic a lot too.

  • Johanne Brunet

    Johanne Brunet

Fantastic shot, my friend! The window physically dominates the image in terms of space, yet you have managed to make the man stand out the most.

He comes into into view as an afterthought, only once we have looked at the whole scene, especially the window and tree. However, when we do see him, our eyes are drawn irresistibly, and the bright features of the window suddenly fade back into the background, unimportantly.

Only a powerful impression of need, sadness and misery remains in a world that is trying hard to make us believe that all is bright and happy.

    National Geographic material indeed!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

My dear friend – thank you for such a detailed appreciation of this pic. My biggest worry was that the window would overpower the man and he’d be overlooked. I’m so glad that I’ve managed to not lose the main subject.
You described exactly the feeling I had when there. I first noticed the window and pulled over and ran down this street to get a pic. But when I noticed the man – the window literally faded away.
Don’t know about Nat Geo – but I hope this made enough of an impression on someone to make a difference.

  • Rebecca Cozart

    Rebecca Cozart

    Beatiful composition.I agree with Johanne’s well-put comments.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Rebecca. Johanne is a poet/writer with her words – so much so that at times I forget that english isn’t her first language!! She put down in words exactly what I wanted to say!!

Vikram…..when I first looked at this I was taken with the rich colours and the wonderful composition. And then was very quickly taken over with sad emotion when my eyes rested upon the man. You have a great talent when it comes to photojournalistic type images that definitely tell a story and move the viewer. Anyway, you know how I feel about poverty and the homeless and I applaud you for bringing attention to it through your art, hopefully in turn speaking to someone enough to maybe lend a helping hand. This speaks volumes my friend :)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you Shelly. Unfortunately a lot of sad stories to tell. I know how you feel and hope art like this does move people to do more than appreciate the pic.
    Really appreciate your comment Shelly.

  • Tami Nielsen

    Tami Nielsen

This shot and title is very thought provoking and sadly very real for a lot of people right now. I agree with George, it is DEFINITELY worthy of being in National Geographic! You have tremendous talent!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Tami! I’ve got to get George to stop all this Nat Geo stuff!! LOL!!

  • micklyn

    micklyn

Oh WOW Vikram, this is awesome. Purely as an artwork it works on every level and then there’s the deeper story that makes you think past the pretty colours… a favourite. ( :

  • Ursula Rodgers

    Ursula Rodgers

Such an excellent, excellent image Vikram!! I can just imagine the feeling though, of being pleased to take such a beautiful photograph, followed by realising the reality of the situation of the man lying there. I agree with the others, you have a brilliant photojournalistic eye!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Ursula – yeah it was a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions – actually felt quite bad about posting this pic here as I know there is no way it will personally help that poor man. Plus I didn’t get a chance to do what I normally do – share the pic with the person and get their ok.

  • gabryshak

    gabryshak

i learned about fareStart in 1999 when i belonged to the National Association of Catering Executives as a Wedding & Event Coordinator and Venue Relation Specialist… we produced several auctions and benefits for fareStart and even volunteered as helpers in the kitchen or in the restraurant as servers… fareStart is totally a class act organization… in fact, oh my go see our book that features them heART that is making a difference it happens to be in full preview right now!!! (usually they only open the first 15 pages!!) ... all the most premier chefs in town support their group and actually cook in the kitchen with the homeless in training once a month… they are an awesome group…
♥glad you found us and look forward to more work from you

these images always leave me feeling frustrated and useless! I wish he was just having a sleep because then I could say this is such a beautifully composed image…. and it is except you didn’t set him up, he is there due to circumstances that probably could have been controlled or made better. Well done for highlighting the down side of humanity in a beautiful way xox

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Another RB friend Ann Appel told me – “One at a time” .... that really helps me lessen the frustration I feel at these scenes and pushes me towards action. Thanks for the comment Nic. I’m glad this pic touched you.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Vivek. Mixed feelings actually … happy I got the shot, but kinda guilty as it felt like I was exploiting his situation – the first pic of a person I’ve taken without taking permission (I usually ask first or show the pic after I’ve taken it and ask if it’s ok to keep it).
