Splaaaasshhh!!
Lemon splash into water – another cliche shot that like water-drop shots is something that should be tried.
A rainy sunday today finally made me try this using a couple of flashes and a glass flower vase (as my tank). I did a bunch of others – but the cliched lemon had to be the first!

I love watching you take a cliche and turn it on its ear. You have the gift.
Vikram Franklin replied
LOL! Thank you – making a nice collection of cliche shots!! Kinda trying to earn my stripes first..
TickerGirl
Excellent Vikram, love it!

Was afraid this might be too common a shot.

Nathalie Chaput
Great shot Vikram!!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Nathalie! How have you been – not chatted for a bit!
Shelly Hiebert
WOW! Love this Vikram! Perfect capture buddy! Can you explain home-made snooted? The lighting on this is perfecto :)
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Shelly – nice to hear from you. Thanks for the compliment on the lighting.
You’re going to laugh – a snoot is used over a light source in order to provide more directional control on the light. I use the DIY option of cutting the right shape out of one end of a Pringles can so I can slip it over the flash head. I used it as the light was hitting the front of the lens as well as bouncing off the glass in all directions – this kept it right where I wanted to.
Ursula Rodgers
Cliche or not, this is a fabulous shot my friend!!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Ursula!! Hey I never said cliches were bad. Just feel they’re something I need to do to find out ‘how’.
Carole Brunet
Fantastic shot Vikram!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Carole! These kind of shots are fun little kitchen experiments!
Shelly Hiebert
Aaaahahaha! Yep, I laughed….but then I quickly thought…..man Vikram is brilliant!
Vikram Franklin replied
LOL! – I thought it’d evoke thoughts of ‘cheap’. It works, so that’s all that matters.
fauselr
great shot, sounds like you had a lot of fun
Vikram Franklin replied
Hey thanks – yep, had a lot of fun.
Wendi Donaldson
Playin’ in the water again!!! LOL….fabulous shot, Vikram…you’ve done a super job with this one – I like it when it rains!

Jan Timmons
Love this, no matter how cliched you say it is, and appreciate the list of lighting equipment you used. Sharing information like that means to me that you’re a cool dude and fairly confident in your talent.
Vikram Franklin replied
Thank you so much Jan! I never meant cliche in a deragatory sense – they’re cliche shots precisely because there’s something about them that makes people want to take them again and again (like me). On the set-up – hey, share and share alike – and who knows, perhaps I will get some pointers on how to improve the set-up. Thank you – your comment means a lot to me.
whalegeek
Oh, cliche or not, this is fun and beautiful. I’ve been playing around with dropping fruit into vases with club soda for extra splash and bubbling. My set up is not as advanced as yours, involving a reflector underneath the vase and overhead sunlight. It takes time to get the right image but it’s ever so rewarding as is your refreshing lemon plunging into the drink. Thanks for sharing your production information, too. I wish more Bubblers would do that for interest’s sake.
Vikram Franklin replied
Thank you so much! Enjoyed seeing your travels through your pics. Would like to see the results from your set-up too – sounds like it would work well if taken outdoors and the light would be less harsh too. You’re welcome on the set-up info I’ve included – it’s not rocket science and anyone would be able to figure it out with a little patience. Most of it is in the little adjustments you need to make to get the final image – different for each person.
Joanne Bradley
Wonderful effect! The whole series is explosive! But I really like the lemon!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thank you so much Joanne!! Explosive is the right word – was a very wet kitchen once I was through!!

Shoaib .
love the splash in here.. very great technical shots
Vikram Franklin replied
LOL! Not really Shoaib – if you had seen this set up in the kitchen, ‘technical’ would be the last word you’d have thought of.
Just used a couple of flashguns (can be done with a single flash) and a tripod with a remote to trigger the shutter (as I was the one doing the dropping).
Hannah Fenton-...
Cool shot!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks for the comment and dropping by Hannah!

Superb work Vikram, really impressed with this. Love how you improvise with makeshift snoods and the like, I do the same, suprising what you can knock up ‘eh.
But the final result, well, you have set a high standard here, and inspired me to try something similar some time maybe. Well done my friend.
Vikram Franklin replied
LOL! Better to save that har earned money for lenses eh!
I take a lot of cues from DIYphotography – but more often than not, it’s the need that forces an improvisation.
Thank you so much Pete – very much appreciated!
