Come play with me
To give you an idea of scale on those roots – this old man of the forest (300+ yrs old) – made an ideal obstacle course for this little girl. This tree has managed to survive the growth of the city and is pretty much close to the center of Bangalore.

Holy sh*t what a tree, nice image vikram
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks David – my first comment when I saw this was along those lines too!
Joanne Bradley
Wow, isn’ this incredible! Fantastic shot, I love how you captured the little one in motion and her blue attire just pops against the tree trunk, really good capture of light as well!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Joanne – was lucky to find her – adds so much to present scale.
Marinapallett

monocotylidono
Fantastic capture Vikram! What an amazing find, and your idea of using the little girl to define a sense of proportion is brilliant. This is just a brilliant set!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks George – as I said to Joanne – I was really lucky to find her! I’m still amazed at the size of the tree. The trunk must have been atleast 18 feet across at its widest.
Johanne Brunet
WOW!!! This is simply incredible! What an awesome capture and fantastic point of view. The light is so beautiful on the old gnarled roots!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Johanne – this was the highlight of the day for me!
PS: Because of the strong contrasts in light – I made an HDR out of a single RAW image. This is pretty darn close to exactly what I saw.
Cheri Perry
Wow…now those are some roots…nice capture. Thanks for sharing it with the “Neighborhoods” group.
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Cheri! I’ve been in the city for 3 years and had never known this existed – it’s surreal to see something this old survive the growth my city has seen.
Vulcan Spark S...
wow
Vikram Franklin replied
I eventually said the same thing after a bit – Wow!

I think I like this one even better. With the other shot I thought I could sense how big it was but with this one it looks even bigger! The little girl playing on it is perfect!! That is one incredible tree!!!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Ann – yes, there is definitely something to having a human being provide scale to a pic (all those articles I read on composition appear to not have been totally wasted – LOL)
Ursula Rodgers
That is the most incredible tree! Fantastic shot Vikram :))
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Ursula – this has been here since the late 1600s – it gave me some serious perspective on things.
Wendi Donaldson
Wow….now we get the full perspective!! Truly captivating.
Vikram Franklin replied
Yep – I took the first one and realised that it really needed something to provide scale. I went first (I’m just over 6ft) and those roots came up to my ears! I then saw this little girl heading towards the tree and that made a MUCH better pic!
Nicolette Thain
OMG!!! only because of that child can we fully appreciate the sheer mammoth size of this incredible tree!!! HOLY CRAP!
Vikram Franklin replied
That’s about the first thing that escaped my lips – HOLY CRAP!!
Amazing, amazing tree!!
