Whoa Vikram! What a great result! So you did the side lighting with this I am assuming? It is really perfect. LOVE the spoon idea….this turned out so great….awesome work bud!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks so much Shelly. Yep – sidelighting (cactus trigger to my SB800). It was a fun shoot (but very smelly fun!). I’d lost all my smoke pics before I could upload them in Dec when my disk crashed so needed to reshoot.

  • Mark Tull

    Superb work, well done ;o)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you so much Mark – this was a fun shoot. Not too much skill once the set-up is done, but the results are almost always attention grabbers.

    Wickedly cool!!

Thanks Pamela – so glad that you think so!

  • DApixara

    DApixara

    Stunning…how do you do it….

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thank you – flip the pic and you’ll see. The rest is a joss stick, a dark room and off-camera flash.

  • Dean Mullin

    Dean Mullin

Nice Vikram – I’ll have to give it a go once I recover from my weekend of excess!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Dean – sounds like you had a fun weekend! I decided to be anti-social this weekend.
Next weekend – splash pics (not drop pics – but things going splash!)

Playing can result in some wonderful captures! Let me guess… did you rotate the picutre 180 degrees? If not, then I’m not really able to figure out what you’ve done to achieve this.

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Got it right in one Peter! I still need to get smoke rings – I tried and tried – I need to fashion something (like bellows) to get the rings.

  • monocotylidono

    monocotylidono

Are joss sticks addictive? LOL Fascinating work once again Vikram. You are so inventive!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

I’m pretty certain they can’t be – the smell still lingers at home and I continue to get dirty looks from the wife – LOL.
Thanks George – had to think of something to make this ‘different’.
Note to self: get nice smelling ones like citronella or something and don’t just go for the longest ones to get more smoke.

Great smoke capture….bummer about losing all your shots! I lost a ton last May…hate it when that happens. Guess we learn! Cactus trigger? ...details?? :) Cheers!

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Wendi – lost them a day after I shot them over a weekend. I usually back-up right away, but in this case I shot the set over 2 days so didn’t back up and lost everything. Oh well!
Cactus – http://www.gadgetinfinity.com/product.php?productid=16766 – I use these to wirelessly trigger my flash – they’re less affectionately called “Poverty Wizards” as they’re the cheapo versions of Pocket Wizards (sort of).

the spoon really separates this from other smoke images (that are wonderful in their own right!)

  • Vikram Franklin replied

Thanks Nic – yep, after shooting about 100 shots, I started getting bored myself :-) Being in the kitchen (my studio – LOL), my mind started wandering….

  • Johanne Brunet

    Johanne Brunet
