This is something I really, really want to master. Fantastic capture Vikram. Such clarity. Please feel free to share some tips!

Ok Vikram, you’ve made me jealous. I really want to do photos like this, but my attempts fall far short. Do you use an off-camera flash? I really like this!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thank you so much – especially from both of you – this is very high praise.
How I did it: Glass bowl in the kitchen sink with the tap adjusted to a drip a second. The colours come from a plastic bag kept under the bowl (red) and a blue bag kept behind the bowl. Macro lens prefocussed on where the drops landed. I used off-camera (SB600) fired from the left – below the level of the bowl (diffused with my own fashioned diffuser). Just time your shots – I got 1 decent shot every 3-4. I’ve also used on camera inbuilt flash and the results were ok there too.

My question – what resolution do I upload files on RB in? These are all high res – but it’s a slow process!
Donell Trostrud
I think an off-camera flash is key to this. I don’t have one and usually with a straight on flash you get harsh shadows. Also, with my in-camera flash I’m limited to a camera speed of 1/200. What speed did you take this at?
Regarding upload size, my pics are usually in the 3400×2300 range. It is a long wait sometimes, but often (and it may just be my computer) I will check my “art” status in another tab and see if it has uploaded already – sometimes the upload screen doesn’t seem to finish, but I’ll find that not only has it already uploaded, but I’ll have 4 or 5 views of it! So if it seems to be taking too long – open up “art” in another tab and check on it.

I took these at 1/200. I had initially done some at 1/60 – and got some good ones as the flash froze motion. But at 1/200 the ‘keepers’ ratio started improving.
I just uploaded a pic that I took with on camera flash – “When 2 drops collide” – take a look…. I did use a home-fashioned diffuser for it though – you can see it in the reflection.

I’ll have to experiment more with it and whip up a diffuser of some sort. What was your aperture set to and what kind of a diffuser did you make?
I am quite intrigued by drop shots and I thought you had to have a higher speed. Check out Rich Allen’s work if you like this stuff. Totally amazing

Congrats Vik,,,,this is a marvelous image,,,, I love the fact that the middle drop is not perfectly round!!!!
Vikram Franklin replied
Thanks Linda – that’s just gravity and I can’t take any credit!
If you look closely at the drop though, you’ll see the blue plastic dish and a redpaper I was using to get the colours here – LOL!
