I am just back from a trip to The Netherlands. I was delighted to find that a Painted Cow, had gone on her holidays to the Floriade 2012 international Gardening Festival, near Venlo in the Province of Limburg.

The Cow Parade is said to be the largest participative art project in the world. Having been seen by 300m people world wide it certainly has a claim to that title! In fact there are many cow parades. The organisers provide plain white fiberglass cows – mostly in three characteristic stances – and artists and community groups in a local area come together to decorate their cow in a way that highlights a locally relevant theme.

There are twelve, or more of these cows in Ebrington Square and a few others scattered around Derry.

This one was in the Floriade 2012 international gardening festival near Venlo in the province of Limburg in the South East of The Netherlands.

Candystripes? She looks like a Derry City WAG. lol. Love this picture, George. Hope you had a good trip to the Netherlands. x

  • Agnes,
Thank you. Yes the sunglasses are a bit Posh-Spice-ish, and I also noticed the stars on her horns. So with sunglasses, stars and stripes I think she might be an Irish-American Derry-City WAG who has time not only for a bit of gardening but also for some international research for her gardening.

As for my trip – I was busy (at a conference of panoramic photographers) most of the time, but nonetheless came back with 50Gb of photographs. It will be a while before I have them all processed!!

So cute! Glad to see countries other than the U.S. do this. In my county in Florida, they paint horses, and in Connecticut where I used to live, they painted cows. They always make me smile.

  • AuntDot,
Thank you. Yes these ones are part of a global project. It reached my home town this year. At first I didn’t realise that they were all over the place!

They are based on very realistically proportioned fibre-glass models. Despite the whimsical colours and designs they somehow seem very life-like. I think it is the eyes and the angle of the head. It is hard for even the most skeptical of observers not to engage with them and kids tend to be all over them.

So when I came across one when I was traveling in The Netherlands it was like I had met an old friend from home! :-)
