This painted cow is part of Derry’s Cow Parade in Ebrington Square, Derry.

Each of the cows in the parade was painted by a different artist. Each artist was paired with a community group and worked with them to identify a theme.

This one was created by The Gasyard Centre and Pilots Row Community Centre who named it The Shirt Factory Horn. Its theme is Derry’s shirt factories. The artists involved were Catherine Duddy and Mary Kennedy.

It is also the middle cow in my close-up of of Three Cows on Parade. This is one of three photographs that include this cow

The Cow Parade is said to be the largest participative art project in the world. Having been seen by 300m people world-wide it certainly has a claim to that title! In fact there are many cow parades.

The organisers provide plain white fiberglass cows – mostly in three characteristic stances – and artists and community groups in a local area come together to decorate their cow in a way that highlights a locally relevant theme.

There are twelve, or more of these cows in Ebrington Square and a few others scattered around Derry.

She’s lovely, George. Good title. The shirt factory history in Derry is fascinating. x

  • Agnes,
Thanks. I have a few more of these on their way, including a panorama with this one.

Delightful. I love these inclusive projects that unify people. Nice capture George!

  • Yvonca,
Thank you. Yea I enjoyed my afternoon with the painted cows! After weeks of rain it was probably the first really sunny day of the summer here. I spent hours wandering around them all. It was only when I did the research for the captions that I discovered that I knew some of the people involved with some of the groups that decorated the cows.

We had painted cows here in Chicago, painted huskies out in Dekalb and someone started some painted dinosaurs but that one fizzled. Good energy.

  • Yvonca, Yes I think that one of the early projects of the organisation behind our Cow Parade was the one in Chicago … (I just stumbled across that fact when digging for caption material). It does seem to engage with people … there is something about the postures of the cows they have a real air of cowness abut them. I kept expecting the sitting one to start working its jaw as it chewed the cud.
