This painted cow is part of Derry’s “Cow Parade” in Ebrington Square, Derry. Ebrington Square was formerly Ebrington Army Barracks. Under the guidance of Ilex (the local Urban Regeneration Company) it has been transformed into a public open space. Gradually the buildings around it are being renovated and finding new uses.

Each of the cows in the parade was painted by a different artist. Each artist was paired with a community group and worked with them to identify a theme.

This one was created by Maydown Seniors Group who named it Ermintrude. Its theme is “The Irish diaspora”. It was painted by Dr Andrea Redmond. On each side is a map of the world on which is marked many places called “Derry” or “Londonderry”. There seems to be at least one on every continent.

It is also the first cow in my close-up of of Three Cows on Parade.

The Cow Parade is said to be the largest participative art project in the world. Having been seen by 300m people world wide it certainly has a claim to that title! In fact there are many cow parades. The organisers provide plain white fiberglass cows – mostly in three characteristic stances – and artists and community groups in a local area come together to decorate their cow in a way that highlights a locally relevant theme.

There are twelve, or more of these cows in Ebrington Square and a few others scattered around Derry.

These were stitched and blended together using Hugin, which in turn invoked Nona, Enblend and Enfuse combine the images and achieve the HDR effect.

I love cows, George, and these at Ebrington are my official favourite bovines. Great capture, I love how the positioning of the cow. x

  • Agnes,
Thank you. Yea I had a great time over in Ebrington when the sun came out! To shoot this panorama I had the tripod mounted on the cows back, to get the horizontal shots, and to get the cow herself I had the closed tripod at arms length above it.

  • Jesika,
Thank you … Oh I see you have a bridge in your home town a bit like our new footbridge – that leads to where this photograph was taken.

Yes, George, ours is the Millennium Bridge, for foot and cycle traffic. It’s hideous, completely out of keeping with the city and the handsome stone bridges, but very photogenic in its ugliness.

  • Jesika,
Most people think our footbridge is elegant … though I have heard some criticism of its esthetics. The most remarkable thing about it has been the effect that it has had on health and fitness locally. It connects Derry’s city centre with the best park in town. Consequently it has got loads of people taking gentle exercise. Had the city been given £15m for a health project I don’t think anyone would have suggested spending it on a footbridge, but undoubtedly through the number of heart attacks avoided and pounds shed it has saved the health-service that much already.
