Red Campion is a herbaceous biennial wildflower, that flowers from May to October. It has dark pink, unscented flowers. Each flower has five petals each with a deep notch at the edge. The redish-purple calyx is what gives it the “red” in its name.

This specimen was photographed in Burntollet Woods – a new area of open access woodlands in County Derry, Northern Ireland.

Botanical Name: Silene dioica,

Burntollet Woods is a 24 hectare (59 acre) area of woodland in Faughan Valley. It was created by The Woodland Trust. It lies between Ness Country Park and Oaks Wood, providing a habitat corridor for wildlife between the two areas of woodland.

Burntollet Woods has been planted with 43,000 native trees – mostly oak but also ash, alder and wild cherry. It also includes an 11 hectare (27 acre) meadow of wild flowers.

The Woodland Trust say that the project was made possible by funding from the NI Environment Agency, The Forestry Service and by public donations including one significant donation by an “anonymous Canadian tree enthusiast”. So thanks to the Canadians!

Photographic Technical Details
This photograph was shot on a Canon EOS 5d Mkii at 1/400 f10 with a 70-300mm Canon lens set at 100mm with a circular polarizing filter. In post-production processing in Apple Aperture it got a bit of a tweak of differential contrast … soft on the background and a little crisper on the flower.

Hi, George:>) When I was in Ireland (1981) what stuck with me more than anything was the people, then the GREEN (then the tinkers). The Ring of Kerry and Blarney Castle were saturated in green, beautiful green. But I digress . . . You are so very, very kind to link to my floral gallery in your comment – I’ve never seen anyone do that before – THANK YOU!

  • Mother’,
I think you will find that it is all connected … being on the edge of the Atlantic facing the onshore winds … we have a lot of rain here, that’s why everything is so green, and of course while sheltering from the rain one of the best things to do is to go on line and be sociable!
