This Meadow Buttercup was photographed in Burntollet Woods – a new area of open access woodlands in County Derry, Northern Irleland.

Its botanical name is Ranunculus acris it is also sometimes known as the “tall buttercup”.

Burntollet Woods is a 24 hectare (59 acre) woodland in Faughan Valley. It lies between Ness Country Park and Oaks Wood, providing a habitat corridor for wildlife between the two areas of woodland.

Burntollet Woods is about 10km from Derry city. It was created by The Woodland Trust. They have planted it with 43,000 native trees – mostly oak but also ash, alder and wild cherry. It also includes an 11 hectare (27 acre) meadow of wild flowers.

They say that the project was made possible by funding from the NI Environment Agency and by public donations including one significant donation by an “anonymous Canadian tree enthusiast”.
